The Society of Bakery Women was founded in 1998 by several women attending the American Society of Baking Technical Conference with the goal of providing a networking organization for women in the baking industry.

Since its founding, the Society of Bakery Women has been providing networking opportunities for women in the baking industry as it originally envisioned. The Society also has added a key component to its philosophy which is to mentor students of milling and baking science who are entering the baking field as a career. Ninety-five percent of those currently entering the field are women.

The Society holds an annual dinner every year to gather both professionals and students in the baking industry. It also holds an event during the IBIE (International Baking Industry Expo) every three years.
